Policy/Program Purpose

 

The Department works with elders to record and protect oral histories and terminology that is threatened.

Benefits and Services

 

This program preserves and promotes the use of Inuit language and long unused terminology. In a culture with few written resources, this is a way of preserving traditional terminology and stories essential to language and culture in Nunavut.

Brief Description of the Policy Issue

 

To promote and protect Nunavut's culture and heritage. There is limited time to learn from the generation of Nunavummiut who grew up on the land. There is an urgent need to record oral histories and language dialects, to preserve the richness of Inuit culture for future generations to learn from the elders' experience.

Expected Outcomes for the Policy/Program

 

Have a database of oral history collected from each of Nunavut's community's eldest citizens, with first priority being given to those communities with the least amount of collected oral history. These oral histories are also expected to contribute to research and understanding of traditional but long unused terminology.

This program will benefit all of Nunavut's future generations.
