Alberta for All Ages: Directions for the Future
Released in June 2000, Alberta for All Ages: Directions
for the Future is the final report and recommendations of the
Steering Committee for the Government-wide Study on the Impact
of the Aging Population. The Study was designed to review trends
and programs, identify issues, and engage Albertans in thinking
about the future and the kinds of steps needed to prepare for
an aging population.
Alberta's Healthy Aging and Seniors Wellness
Strategic Framework 2002-2012
The Strategic Framework uses a population health
promotion approach, and shows the relationships among the interacting
factors in healthy aging and seniors
wellness. It is intended to be a resource for stakeholders and
partners in addressing the opportunities and challenges posed
by an aging population for regional health authorities and for
all Albertans.

The Directory of Seniors' Organizations in Alberta lists not-for-profit organizations
that offer ongoing services or programs designed specifically
for seniors.

Information and tips on traffic safety and aging
drivers can be found on this link to Alberta's Ministry of Transportation.
Guardianship for Dependent Adults
This link leads to Guardianship publications, self-help
kits and fact sheets on the Guardianship program. The Guardianship
program is for dependent adults over the age of 18 years who
are repeatedly or continuously unable to care for themselves
and unable to make personal decisions.
Personal Directives
A personal directive allows an individual to prepare
written instruction on personal matters in case they become
incapable of making those decisions later. This link provides

What to do about it!
Produced by the Office for the Prevention of Family
Violence this document helps define what constitutes abuse of
older adults, signs of abuse and related information, including
some contact resources.
Saying Farewell Handbook
This guide provides readers with information and
forms to assist them through the death and dying process. The
Saying Farewell Handbook gives an overview of funerals, legal
requirements surrounding death, methods of burial, will and
estates, necessary paperwork and financial assistance available.

BC HealthFiles
Fact sheets with information about flu vaccinations
for seniors, hearing loss in adults, how seniors can prevent
falls, environmental health hazards, safety and health tips,
and up to date information on communicable diseases such as
West Nile Virus and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The BC HealthFiles, a component of the BC HealthGuide Program,
are regularly updated to include the latest BC health advice,
and provided to all provincial health units throughout BC.
BC HealthGuide Program
The BC HealthGuide Program provides valuable health
information for all BC residents through a combination of resources
including the BC HealthGuide handbook and BC First Nations Health
Handbook, BC NurseLine, and BC HealthGuideOnLine. The BC HealthGuide
offers useful advice and information on more than 190 common
health concerns, tips on preventing illness or using easy home
remedies. The BC First Nations Health Handbook companion guide
provides information on unique health services for First Nations,
as well as advice for health professionals serving First Nations
individuals and communities. BC HealthGuideOnLine is a secure
knowledgebase providing information on more than 2,500 common
health topics, tests, procedures and other resources available
to BC residents. The BC NurseLine provides health information
and advice through a toll-free (BC only) telephone line, staffed
by registered nurses, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week. The service is also available for those who are
deaf or hard of hearing, and translation services are available
in 130 languages.
Information for Seniors -Your Guide to
Programs & Benefits in British Columbia
The sixth edition of this comprehensive publication
was published in August, 2003. It provides an overview of benefits
and programs for seniors in BC from all levels of government.
It is available at seniors' centres, MLA offices and government
agents, or by calling the Health Info Line toll-free in BC 1-800-465-4911,
or at (250) 952-1742 in Victoria.

A Legal Information Guide for Seniors

This guide has been developed by the Manitoba Seniors
Directorate, the Public Trustee and the Community Legal Education
Association, to assist Manitoba seniors better understand
wills and estates and related matters of powers of attorney
and health care directives. The contents reflect questions seniors
raise on the Seniors Information Line and with seniors' organizations.
Emergency Information for Seniors - Suggestions
to be More Prepared for Emergencies
Emergency situations such as fires, floods and
severe storms can be hazardous for anyone. Seniors may be at
additional risk. This website provides some suggestions to help
seniors be more prepared for emergencies should they occur.
Expect Respect - Stop Elder Abuse - They've Earned
It
Seniors deserve respect and the right to be safe
from harm by those who live with them, care for them or come
into day-to-day contact with them. Sometimes, however, older
people are not treated with respect. Sometimes, disrespect crosses
the line into abuse. This booklet helps seniors understand what
abuse is by defining the different types of abuse and provides
information on how to avoid abuse. It also lists the help that
is available for seniors who are living in abusive situations.

The Older and Wiser Driver - Tips to Remain an Older and Wiser
Driver!
This booklet provides information about changes
in vision, reflexes, flexibility and hearing related to aging
that may affect driving. Aging drivers can adjust their driving
habits to cope safely with these changes, but to do this they
must recognize their limitations and unsafe driving practices

The Seniors Action Plan 2002-2003 - A Response
to the Review of Seniors Programs and Services addresses issues

and the NWT Seniors Society over the next year.

A Guide to Advance Care Planning
The Ontario Seniors' Secretariat released a "Guide
to Advance Care Planning" in March 2002, as part of Ontario's Strategy for Alzheimer
Disease and Related Dementias, which was announced in September
1999. Advance directives on care choices is
one of ten key initiatives in this Strategy. This Guide was
created to help seniors and persons with dementia in Ontario become more aware of the
process and benefits of advance care planning and their rights
in this area. It was developed in partnership with consumer
advocates, seniors' groups and service providers to explain
advance care planning and provide answers to frequently asked
questions to help seniors ensure that their care and medical
choices are followed should they become incapable of making
those decisions.
A Guide to Programs and Services for Seniors
in Ontario
This Guide, launched in February 2003, was developed
by the Ontario Seniors' Secretariat, Ministry of Citizenship,
as part of its commitment to improving seniors' quality of life,
and educating seniors, their families, caregivers, and service
providers about programs and services to which they are entitled.
It is a comprehensive directory to provincial, federal, municipal
and community services for seniors in Ontario. This Guide was developed
in consultation with both provincial and federal government
ministries, major seniors' organizations and service providers.
It is available in hard copy and "on-line" in English
and French, and also available "on line" in Chinese.
Senior Smart Ontario
Senior Smart Ontario is an Internet site developed
by the Ontario Seniors' Secretariat in partnership with the
Ontario Gerontology Association that offers policy makers, municipal
planners, seniors' advocates, service providers, and the general
population a wealth of information. The site includes statistics
on Ontario seniors, a quiz on seniors and the aging process,
links to gerontological journals and to organizations in Ontario,
Canada and other nations that are developing or implementing
policies on aging, a link to the National Framework on Aging,
tools and techniques for effectively communicating with seniors,
and a link to the Seniors Policies and Programs database.

Provincial Policy Framework and Action Plan for Older Persons
The Provincial Policy Framework and Action Plan
for Older Persons was developed by
the Saskatchewan Provincial Advisory Committee of Older Persons,
a committee appointed to advise the Minister Responsible for
Seniors. The 13-member committee is comprised of individuals
familiar with the concerns of seniors.
