Veteran Programs

The Government of Canada has tabled the Enhanced New Veterans Charter Act that will significantly improve financial support for injured Canadian Forces members and Veterans

If passed, these changes will build on the existing support available through the New Veterans Charter such as disability awards, rehabilitation services, income replacement, health care benefits and practical help finding a job

New financial measures will:

  • establish a minimum pre-tax income of $40,000 per year for Veterans who unable to be gainfully employed and for those who are in rehabilitation

  • improve access to the Permanent Impairment Allowance (a monthly taxable allowance up to $1,609 per month for life for more seriously injured Veterans)

  • provide a taxable Permanent Impairment Allowance Supplement of $1,000 per month for the most seriously injured Veterans who are unable to be gainfully employed

With these measures, the most seriously injured Veterans will receive a minimum annual income of $58,000

Injured Canadian Forces members and Veterans will have the choice to receive their tax-free Disability Award as a lump-sum payment, as an annual payment, or as a combination of lump-sum and annual payments

The Department of National Defence (DND) and Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) are working together to improve the care available to injured soldiers and their families and address their needs in a timely, consistent and meaningful way

The Government of Canada is spending $52.5 million over five years to establish a "legacy of care" centered around five new initiatives to care for injured soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen For more information, click here
